Aligning Curriculum with Employer Needs

A key initiative deployed out of the Chancellor's Office is the California Community Colleges Economic and Workforce Development (CCCEWD) program whose mission is to advance the state's economic growth and global competitiveness through education, training, and services that contribute to continuous workforce improvement. The role of the community colleges in this effort is to fulfill the vocational education and instructional needs of California's business and industry. The CACT is one of the EWD's initiatives geared towards the advanced technology sector.

The CACT Tech-Explorer makes abstract academic theory interesting by teaching students how to use fabrication tools and apply what they are learning to build a catapult. Students inspired by Tech-Explorer can apply for industry apprenticeships, and earn technical certificates and degrees. They can go on to earn four year degrees in design, engineering and manufacturing.
